CREATING AWARENESS AND ACCESS
Essilor created its inclusive business arm 2.5 New Vision Generation (2.5 NVG) in 2013 to find new and sustainable ways to provide vision care to underserved populations without access to conventional distribution channels.
The work of 2.5 NVG is an important part of Essilor’s expansion into low income markets with an affordable and accessible vision care offer. We develop and deploy inclusive business models that are scalable, adaptable and impactful. Our work is helping to build a taskforce of skilled primary vision care providers and micro-entrepreneurs in low-income communities. Through this, we create a sustainable ecosystem that generates employment and helps alleviate poverty.
Since 2013, 2.5 NVG has been exploring different inclusive business models to solve the issue of access to vision care by creating the infrastructure to serve ‘base of the pyramid’ consumers.
These inclusive business models range from training of primary vision care providers, creating mobile and fixed vision care points of service in partnership with hospitals and partnering with local NGOs to include vision care within their services.
To help create primary vision care providers in underserved regions, 2.5 NVG has modules that range from one day training in basic near vision screening skills, to a twelve month program giving a certified vocational training. This includes the commercial skills to set up and run a successful small vision care business.
No single model fits all needs. We constantly explore how to adapt products, screening methods and distribution channels to each local context.
A key barrier preventing people from correcting their vision, especially in rural areas, is the ability to have an eye test and get equipped immediately after. 2.5 NVG has designed a complete range of products customized for BoP consumers to facilitate the dispensing of glasses at the point of need. A key solution is Ready2ClipTM – frames and ready-to-mount lenses that enable a pair of glasses to be prepared to an individual’s prescription on the spot.
Supported by dedicated sales and logistics teams in 12 markets, 2.5 NVG currently distributes products across 50 countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
