UNITED NATIONS PASSES RESOLUTION TO MAKE EYE CARE PART OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS) - Essilor See Change

ALL 193 MEMBER NATIONS ADOPT NEW RESOLUTION: ‘2030 IN SIGHT: A NEW GLOBAL AGREEMENT FOR EYE CARE FOR ALL’

The United Nations has officially passed a resolution to make eye care accessible for all by 2030. This significant milestone marks the first agreement adopted by the UN to tackle preventable sight loss and aligns with EssilorLuxottica’s ongoing efforts to eliminate uncorrected poor vision in a generation.

EssilorLuxottica welcomes the news and believes it is a pivotal moment for the entire eye health sector. The resolution sets a deadline for countries to ensure local populations have full access to eye care services and, for the first time, calls for new targets on eyecare to be included in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While placing the responsibility on governments, it also creates new expectations for international financial institutions and donors to provide targeted finances, especially to support developing countries in tackling preventable sight loss.

In 2019 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with the support of over 20 government, NGO partners and global health experts, EssilorLuxottica launched a first-of-its-kind roadmap on what it will take to make vision care accessible for all. Since its launch we have already started to put the roadmap into action in several countries working alongside partners and governments with great success.

“As highlighted in our roadmap, we believe that governments play an integral role making eye care accessible for all,” shares Anurag Hans, Head of Mission at EssilorLuxottica. “We are excited about this new mandate for governments to prioritize vision care in their national agendas. We look forward to working with leaders in government, businesses, and civil society to implement our proven models and create access for all like we, and our partner organizations, have achieved in Bhutan, Rwanda, The Gambia, and the Indian states of Telangana and Karnataka.”

This commitment to eye health within the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was advanced by UN Friends of Vision, together with OneSight of which EssilorLuxottica is a founding partner.
