Addressing poor vision among children is central to EssilorLuxottica’s commitment to eliminate poor vision in one generation, which is why we have partnered with CooperVision, Peek Vision and the African Eye Institute (AEI) to launch the“1 School at a Time” campaign in South Africa. The initiative aims to upscale, accelerate and expand access to eye health services, screening children in KwaZulu-Natal schools and providing free spectacles as needed.
The ability to see clearly impacts many aspects of a child’s life, as well as self-confidence, socialization, and the ability to perform well in different activities. The joint venture aims to strengthen vision care inclusion for children from disadvantaged families and under-served communities, prioritizing the importance of vision care for children. We are targeting approximately 500 learners and 20 educators per school at the pilot stage, which will take place in November 2021 and will serve as a precursor the expansion of this initiative.
We are glad to make this investment in the future of South African children and break down the barriers to learning and sustainable livelihoods. Our partnership with CooperVision, Peek Vision and AEI is in keeping with our commitment to ensure that all sectors – private, public, and nonprofit – are mobilised in service of our children.
