Essilor Base-of-Pyramid (EBoP) Fellow: Lee Zhong Han - Essilor See Change

I am Zhong Han, an aspiring tri-sector athlete and generalist-specialist who endeavors to uphold social and environmental justice. Previously, I co-founded a social enterprise that aims to achieve a healthy and sustainable food system in Singapore.

I applied for the EBoP Fellowship because…

I was moved to contribute to Essilor’s compelling mission of ‘improving lives by improving sight’.

The fellowship offered an opportunity to work on the ground and bring vision care to the 2.5 billion people who suffer from uncorrected poor vision through raising awareness about the importance of vision health, driving philanthropic initiatives and innovating on inclusive business models. As the vital mission and captivating theory of change resonated deeply with my personal vision of learning from seemingly disparate bodies of knowledge and building towards a better world, I took the plunge and applied for the fellowship.

During these six months, I am…

I am learning about operations of the 2.5 New Vision Generation business unit in Indonesia and understanding more about the various distribution channels. In particular, my focus is looking into how we can widen the Mitra Mata channel and increase channel sales.

With this fellowship, I want to….

Through the fellowship, I hope to contribute towards scaling the impact of EBoP Innovation Lab initiatives as well as piloting and testing plausible ideas.

On a personal level, I hope to hone my business fundamentals and obtain new perspectives about the Base-of-Pyramid (BoP) market and to acquire an enhanced understanding of international development to do good better.

After the fellowship, I will be…

I will be embarking on a Bachelor of Business at Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University.

During my undergraduate years, I hope to continue piloting and experimenting with crazy ideas and to expose myself to high-impact organizations such as FSG, Dalberg and the Omidyar Network.

I am also eager to learn more about futures and complex adaptive systems.

So something interesting about me…

I like singing and dancing – but only in the bathroom. I do not have a sophisticated taste in the music I listen to – I simply play playlists on Spotify such as Best of Mando Love Songs, Korean OSTs and Top Hits Singapore.
